During the early 50 percent of the 1910s, the neighborhood Asheville papers ran the syndicated collection “Fashion Fads and Fancies,” which, as its title suggests, targeted on the newest seasonal style traits. Quite a few of the posts tackled women’s qualified attire, offering today’s reader a glimpse into the model norms and expectations in the early days of the 20th century.
As many of the content articles make very clear, elaborate attire was never meant for the place of work. “There are scores of enterprise ladies — so known as — who established forth for their extensive day’s work decked out with an class which the society woman would consider impossible and absurd right before the late afternoon calling and tea hour,” the collection famous in the June 11, 1911, version of The Sunday Citizen.
These types of women of all ages, the paper continued, have on “satins, velvets, ostrich plumes [and] white child gloves” that exceeded their earnings as “stenographer, bookkeeper or clerk.”
The exact same short article stressed resourcefulness and thrift. “The enterprise woman who is intelligent with a needle could make herself dainty blouses and even whole frocks for summer time dress in at her place of work, or may perhaps buy such blouses and frocks at the late-period sales, which are whole of financial gleanings for those who stop by the buying industry immediately after the large harvest has been done.”
Convenience was also emphasised in the piece. “There is no cause why the small business girl should really not have the enjoyment of wearing fresh, dainty, washable dresses in her business office, delivered their type is not too elaborate,” the column suggested. “There are checked and striped ginghams in neutral colorings or in the usually appealing blue tones, which are to be created up in exceedingly fairly models at pretty small selling prices.”
Alongside with attire and frocks, the column tackled headier challenges. “The hat problem is liable to be a vexing 1 to the girl who goes to enterprise,” the June 11, 1911, write-up stated. “So lots of hats are worn out in switch by the each day journeys, the modifications in weather conditions for which 1 is not generally prepared, and the dust of a chaotic business which will sift into cloak rooms and wardrobes.”
The good thing is, “Fashion Fads and Fancies,” claimed on a quantity of replacement alternatives. “The business enterprise female who is younger enough need to put on in summer time one of the good and turning out to be sailor hats in a form that is at the instant modern. If a sailor does not become her, a flexible outing hat of panama will be the most effective preference, and this may well be neatly trimmed with a scarf of pongee or Persian patterned silk, with potentially a quill or two to lend dash.”
Meanwhile, the column ongoing, “The canny business enterprise woman chooses a hat small sufficient and flexible ample to allow of her leaning her head again comfortably in the car or truck heading home at night time. When one is fatigued out, with potentially the memory of a headache to add to one’s difficulties, it is most attempting to be obliged to sit bolt upright for 50 % an hour in the motor vehicle because one’s hat brim will not permit one to lean back.”
